Police keep combat scenes cordoned off; Budapest heavy with debris

History

Police continue to maintain cordons around key points of Budapest which were scenes of conflict on Monday, while debris throughout the downtown streets is a grim reminder of earlier differences between police and anti-government demonstrators.

All roads leading to parliament are closed off, as are sections of the Inner Ring Road and the area around Hungarian public radio, MTI's on-site correspondent reported. Rákoczi Avenue, the city's main east-west thoroughfare, is covered with overturned garbage bins, toppled portable toilets, broken bits of rock and piles of litter. One group of demonstrators has remained by the Elizabeth Bridge albeit in reduced numbers after 0100 hours local time on Tuesday. (english.mti.hu)
