Mass prayer on Budapest Heroes' Square drew hundreds

History

The public prayer which drew several hundred people to Heroes Square despite heavy rain and near-freezing temperatures on Sunday evening ended shortly before 1900 local time.

The two-hour "Prayer for Hungary" was organized to remember the martyrs of Hungary's crushed anti-Soviet revolution in 1956 and to protest against "liars, money-greedy pests and abusers of the land," a speaker, the architect Imre Makovecz said.

Hungarian churches and religious organizations were represented at the assembly. Another speaker addressing the crowd told MTI that a new constitution securing morality for Hungary was needed. There was strong police presence at the gathering, but no disturbances were reported. (english.mti.hu)
