Liberal head presses for government of technocrats

Gábor Fodor, whose liberal party (SzDSz) recently split with the governing coalition, leaving the Hungarian Socialists (MSzP) in a minority government, pressed for the creation of a government of technocrats.
SzDSz on Saturday rejected the government's program for tax cuts of Ft 1,000 billion – Ft 1,200 billion in coming years, saying that it failed to revise social spending and reconsider what they call the government's over-centralized role in the economy. The move was a blow to Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány who has said he will resign if his tax proposals, which aim to spur Hungary's sluggish growth and the 2009 budget fail to win the approval of Parliament.
Fodor said in an interview published in daily Népszabadság on Tuesday that short-term political interests were preventing a restructuring of Hungary's budget-funded institutions, a restructuring necessary to ensure faster and sustainable economic growth.
“I think the quick establishment of a government of technocrats would ensure the fastest possibility of action,” Fodor said. “The establishment of such a government would best serve the interests of Hungary.” (MTI – Econews)
