Hungary hopeful of joining UN Security Council despite late start
Although Hungary got to a late start in its campaign to become a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council in 2012-13, it has done a good job of working off its backlog over the past year, a senior diplomat told national daily Magyar Hirlap on Thursday, reports Politics.hu.
Hungary submitted its application for the seat available to the group of 23 central and eastern European nations in 2007, much later than its rival Slovenia. The third candidate for the post is Azerbaijan.
“Although our rivals are campaigning intensively, Hungarian diplomats are doing their best to succeed,” Deputy State Secretary of Foreign Affairs János Hovari said.
He said that Hungary’s diplomatic efforts to join the Security Council had no impact whatsoever on its position on Syria.
On August 10 Hungary condemned the violent actions committed against Syria’s civilian population and called on the Syrian government to put an immediate end to violence.
Nor is the campaign linked with the recognition of independent Palestinian statehood, the diplomat said.
“Hungary’s approach to the Middle East peace process, Palestinian statehood and the forthcoming UN vote is determined by its interest and that of Europe in the success of this process and in a negotiated settlement, and is based on long-term considerations,” he said.
Hovari said Hungary would like to see the EU member states reach a uniform position on the issue.
Hungary was a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council in 1968-69 and 1992-93.
