Hungarian grape growers protest Italian wine imports

The association involved in protecting the interests of local viticulturists organized a demonstration yesterday for grape growers from Hungaryʼs Kunság region outside the Italian embassy in protest of cheap Italian wine imports which they say makes it impossible for them to survive in the local market.
According the László Budavári, a representative of the grape growers, the imported wine from Italy must be chemically processed because he claims it is impossible to make proper wine for as cheap as 24 euro cents a liter and he has called on the government to protect consumers from counterfeit products. Additionally, the protesters submitted a petition to the Italian ambassador to call on his government to prevent wine counterfeiting.
The radical right Jobbik party has criticized the government for not preventing the flood of cheap wine imports over the past few years. Additionally, one of the party members, Zoltán Magyar, claims the companies involved in importing are "big Fidesz allies," and sees this as a reason for the lack of government intervention.
