Hungarian bird flu vaccine to be tested on 500 volunteers

History

A vaccine developed in Hungary against the H5N1 bird flu virus will be tested on five hundred volunteers, over the next few weeks, the Hungarian public television said late on Friday. A recent test on 150 people verified that the vaccine has been effective in protecting humans from the H5N1 virus, Omninvest, the vaccine’s developer and owner, said. Additional testing in Hungary is to pave the way for the vaccine's official registration according to European Union rules, MTV said. Several countries in Asia and the Middle-East have signed up to buy in the vaccine for tens of billions of forints, the broadcast said, adding that it will cost about 30-35 euros per dose. Omninvest said in April that it had sufficient capacity to produce a volume enough to protect all Hungarians in case of a pandemic. (MTI)
