Fellegi begins talks with IMF
Government Minister without Portfolio Tamas Fellegi began talks in Washington on Monday with representatives from the International Monetary Fund regarding a financial-assistance package for Hungary, the Embassy of Hungary in Washington DC informed MTI on Monday evening.
The embassy said that Mr Fellegi, who as minister without portfolio is leading Hungary’s talks with the International Monetary Fund, would meet throughout the week with IMF officials, including Managing Director Christine Lagarde on Thursday.
Prime Minister Viktor Orban told MTI in an interview on Sunday that Hungary would present no preconditions at talks with the IMF.
Hungary’s foreign minister, Janos Martonyi, said on a television program on Monday evening that "Everything is open to discussion, though this doesn’t mean that we have written a blank check in advance and are saying that we must accept everything." Mr Martonyi added that both Hungary and the IMF must be prepared to show flexibility during the talks.
Hungary’s talks with the International Monetary Fund in Washington are aimed at reaching preliminary agreement on the basis for upcoming official talks. Hungary’s delegation also includes National Bank of Hungary Deputy Governor Ferenc Karvalits and National Economy Ministry State Secretary Gyula Pleschinger.
