EC warns Romania against EU funds for agriculture

The European Commission (EC) decided on Wednesday to give Romania one month to improve the aid systems for farmers, otherwise it risks a 25% provisional cut of farm subsidies from the European Union (EU).

Mariann Fischer Boel, Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, sent the warning letter to Romanian Minister of Agriculture Decebal Traian Remes and expects an answer by November 9. Romania made progress with regard to administrative and control systems but it has not yet fulfilled all its obligations to ensure the correct work of the system, said the European official.

Romania still has time to correct these shortcomings but, as it is quite urgent, a number of quick steps must be taken, according to the European official. This is why she said that she insisted that the Romanian authorities make all necessary efforts to apply the necessary systems. The auditing missions carried out by the EC in Romania in June and September confirmed the persistence of some serious problems and a number of deficiencies. (people)
