EC commends Hungary gov't for dealing with CIA rendition issue

History

Council of Europe Secretary General Terry Davis on Wednesday praised Hungary for its fast action in investigating alleged links to CIA prisoner rendition flights and said all evidence so far suggested Hungary cannot be incriminated in the affair. Davis received Hungarian MEPs Zoltán Szabó and Zsolt Németh and told them it was commendable that Hungary had set up a committee especially investigate national security issues and that this body had treated the CIA prisoner issue as a high priority matter and had launched an investigation to see if Hungary had had any involvement in the illegal transport of prisoners. Amnesty International (AI) recently published information on aircraft landings in Hungary which it says were connected with the illegal transport of captives and has been pressuring the Hungarian government to look into the issue more deeply.
