Designs invited for Margit híd refurbishing

The municipality of Budapest is inviting designs for the planned refurbishing of Margit híd, the capital’s second oldest bridge and one of its most crucial traffic links. City officials are hoping to sign a contract with the winning engineer by October this year, although construction work is unlikely to start before 2008, daily Magyar Hírlap said. The 130-year-old bridge, which was bombed in the second World War and was rebuilt in 1948, got a partial renovation some 30 years ago, but has now become dangerously rusted. Restoration has been on the agenda for nearly 20 years, but was repeatedly put off for fear of a complete traffic halt in the city. Total cost of the renovation is estimated at around Ft 6 billion-Ft 8 billion. (Magyar Hírlap)
