Amendment prevents Spar Express from opening on Sundays
After the government closed loopholes in legislation to further restrict retailers from opening on Sundays, Spar will not be able to operate small shops, dubbed Spar Express, at petrol stations, Hungarian online daily index.hu reported.
When the Sunday closure law was approved by Hungarian parliament, retailer Spar began negotiations with gas station OMV to open small shops at the stations that would sell Spar’s goods. The amendment to the law does not allow retailers not selling gasoline and other related products to remain open on Sundays.
Currently there are seven such Spar Expresses operating at OMV stations and the retailer had been planning to open more.
OMV in Austria jointly operates similar retail shops with local retailer VIVA.
