Vodafone Group Plc, the world's biggest mobile-phone company, named the chief executive of Hewlett-Packard Co.'s Hungarian unit to head its local business.

György Beck, who has led Hewlett-Packard in Hungary since 2002, will take over from interim chief Babis Mazarakis, Vodafone said in an e-mailed statement today. Vodafone Hungary Zrt is the smallest of Hungary's three cellular-phone companies, with a 21% share, or about 2.1 million subscribers. That compares with 45% for the local unit of Deutsche Telekom AG and 34% for a company owned by Telenor ASA. Mazarakis took over as interim CEO in June, when his predecessor Attila Vitai was named to head Vodafone's new Turkish unit. He will return to the company's Greek business, according to the press release. Beck had served as CEO of the local Compaq Computer Corp. from 1998 and headed the Hungarian business of Digital Equipment Corp. from 1994. Hewlett-Packard bought Compaq in 2002, which had acquired Digital in 1998. He was named Hungary's “Manager of the Year” in 2001. (Bloomberg)
