Police concludes investigation on money counterfeiters
Police has concluded investigation into a gang of money counterfeiters including 22 Hungarians and a Russian who made more than 3,000 counterfeit Ft 20,000 notes, the Győr-Moson-Sopron county (west Hungary) police chief said on Monday.
The suspects used special equipment to bleach Ft 2,000 forint notes and turned them into 20,000, including the application of new watermarks, Fábián Gorgosilits said. The operation was exposed last year after they had tried to distribute bills in Győr by purchasing small-value items and getting back the change in genuine notes. The first three suspects were caught in Szolnok, east Hungary, last summer and police managed to roll up the entire organization in the following months.
During house searches in and around Budapest, the chemicals and the technical devices used for printing, as well as guidebooks were found. In addition, bank card readers, weapons and ammunition were also seized. Most members of the gang were aged between 30 and 40, but some of them were minors. Currently ten of the suspects are in preliminary detention, the leader of the gang is accused also of misuse of weapon and counterfeiting documents, for which he can be sentenced up to 20 years in prison.
