Municipalities team up for Ft 12 bln waste project

Awards

More than 100 towns and villages in the Zemplén region in northeast Hungary on Monday set up an association to carry out a Ft 12 billion waste management project.

Of the region's 154 municipalities, 122 agreed to join the association, which will be responsible for collecting, recycling and disposing of an annual 200,000 tons of waste. EU funding will cover 85% of the cost of the program and central budget funding will cover a portion as well, leaving local councils with only a small percentage to pay.
The project, to involve the construction of a single large landfill and four collection points, will start in 2007 and should be completed in two or three years, the association said. The project will satisfy the region's waste management needs for the coming 25 years.
