GIS - Great opportunities ahead

GDi FORUM 2011 - XVI. Esri Hungary User Conference
This year Esri Hungary held it’s annual user conference the sixteenth time 6-7 October 2011. Now the first time the conference was organized together with the international GDi User Conference in the BOSCOLO Hotel Conference Center. The company, as the exclusive dealer of Esri products gives chance since more than twenty years to company leaders and experts to get to know the new innovative solutions which were developed during the past twenty years. The event offered more than 50 presentations and 16 sections to the more than 400 visitors - among them acknowledged professionals in GIS (Geographic Information System) working in governmental and business fields as well - who came from 9 different countries in the area, and Hungary of course.
Starting from this year the conference involved international participation, and it’s primary aim was to offer a platform within the region to professionals to exchange their experiences. Visitors could collect information on new achievements and developments in telecommunications, logistics, financial services, healthcare, environment protection, business services, administration, national defence, and in disaster recovery during the two-day event. Gaining experience from the past years, the conference was divided into several sections to give information in the widest possible range to visitors from all fields. However, this time special attention was given to participants coming from the fields of telecommunication, energy industry, and service sector.
Many experts and leaders of different national organizations gave presentation for example about unified emergency call system, local council’s web services, population registration from GIS support, handling flood risks, dynamic route-planning, transmodel based solutions, and GIS background of energetic research.
Hungarian and international Esri awards were distributed during the conference. Esri’s solutions are applied by more than 300 organizations worldwide - nearly 70 from the USA, and 50 from other countries are being chosen each year to recive awards. The Esri SAG Award (Esri Special Achivement in GIS Award) is given to an organization which establishes, and works with a system that can be a model for the world’s GIS community. The 2011 award was given to the Hungarian Ministry of Rural Development, mainly for the large GIS related innovates coordinated by the Institute of Geodesy, Cartography, and Remote Sensing, and the Central Bureau of Water and Environment. The GIS Professional of the Year Award went to János Oláh, leader IT specialist from the local council of Szombathely.
