Dual citizenship for Hungary’s neighbors?

Awards

As of 1 January 2008, the citizens of non-EU states will only be able to enter Hungary after paying for an expensive visa because Hungary joins the Schengen area on that date.

Hungarian diplomats are trying to facilitate access for the citizens of Hungary’s neighbouring countries. They are seeking the introduction of special entry permits which would be valid for up to five years for inhabitants of the border region.

The newspaper considers this too little: “Everyone knows that the problems Hungary’s accession to the Schengen zone entails can’t be solved like this... There is an alternative: individual applications for dual citizenship, as recently proposed by President László Sólyom. But at present the mere mention of dual citizenship seems to be enough to make the government tremble.” (Magyar Hírlap, courrierinternational)

Producing journalism that is worthy of the name is a costly business. For 27 years, the publishers, editors and reporters of the Budapest Business Journal have striven to bring you business news that works, information that you can trust, that is factual, accurate and presented without fear or favor.
Newspaper organizations across the globe have struggled to find a business model that allows them to continue to excel, without compromising their ability to perform. Most recently, some have experimented with the idea of involving their most important stakeholders, their readers.
We would like to offer that same opportunity to our readers. We would like to invite you to help us deliver the quality business journalism you require. Hit our Support the BBJ button and you can choose the how much and how often you send us your contributions.
