Budapest flood to peak today

Experts at Hungary's National Engineering Directorate (OMIT) still see water levels on the Danube peaking at 8.85 meters plus or minus 20 centimeters on Monday. OMIT said its experts excluded the possibility of any flood plume riding the top of the one headed toward the capital, causing water to rise higher than projected. The river stood at 7.95m at 11 in the morning on Friday and rose to 889 centimeters in Budapest early Monday. Mayor István Tarlós said the river would peak at around 8.95 meters on Monday. The city's flood defenses are effective until the river reaches 9.30 meters, he added. “On the basis of the latest data, the flood will pose a big task, but it can be successfully managed thanks to cooperation on a national scale,” OMIT said. Flood waters on the Danube have forced the closure of embankment roads in the capital and disrupted some public transport service. Prime Minister Viktor Orbán declared a state of emergency in areas affected by flooding along the Danube from noon on Tuesday.
