Budapest council raises taxi fares

The municipal council of Budapest today voted to raise regulated taxi fares in the capital from July 1. The council also approved funds for the renovation of the Chain Bridge.

Council members raised the base fare from HUF 450 to HUF 700, the per-kilometre fare from HUF 280 to HUF 300 and the waiting fee from HUF 70 to HUF 75. Budapest taxi fares have not been raised since 2013, national news agency MTI says.

József Sipeki, the representative of the taxi drivers in the Budapest Chamber of Industry and Commerce, said the members supported a fare increase in light of tighter vehicle requirements, higher insurance premiums and the cost of acquiring tills connected directly to the tax office.

Budapestʼs municipal council also approved the HUF 16 billion renovation of the capitalʼs iconic Chain Bridge on Wednesday. The project will start in September and is not due to be completed until the end of June 2021.

The renovation includes the reconstruction of the Pest side underpass. The tunnel under the Castle District and Clark Adam tér are expected to be renovated in the second phase of the project, depending on available resources.
