Budapest has moved up seven spots to 32nd place on the latest Mastercard Global Destination Cities Index, an annual ranking of global cities based on visitor volume and spending, Hungarian news agency MTI reported Thursday.

Budapest attracted almost 6 million foreign visitors last year. They stayed in the capital for five days, on average, spending the equivalent of USD 103 per day, according to the survey.

Bangkok, London and Paris featured at the top of the Mastercard Global Destination Cities Index, which looked at 162 cities in all.

The index ranks cities based on the number of their total international overnight visitor arrivals, and also cross-border spending by these same visitors in the destination cities in 2017, as well as providing international overnight visitor growth forecasts for 2018, according to a press release on Mastercardʼs website.

Public data is used in deriving the international overnight visitor arrivals and their cross-border spending in each of the 162 destination cities. Forecasts are based upon the weighted average of national-level tourism forecasts and the actual 2018 monthly data at the destination level, which is available to the latest month before release, according to the press release.
