BKV to introduce e-tickets from 2016

Tourism

With the introduction of an e-ticketing system in 2016, the Budapest Transport Company (BKV) expects the number of fare dodgers to drop significantly, Hungarian economic daily Napi Gazdaság reported today.

The current ticket validation system required BKV to spend HUF 1.95 bln to increase the number of security staff and another HUF 500 mln to boost inspection staff, bringing the number of full time inspectors last year to 440 and security guards to 400. As a result, the number of travelers caught without a ticket or pass jumped to 363,000 last year, up from 295,000 in 2013. Revenues from fines exceeded HUF 1 bln in 2014, according to the paper.

With the new e-ticketing system, which is to be put in place by the end of this year, the need for security and ticket inspection staff would decrease dramatically.
