Although the city of Pécs has beat six other contenders to be Hungary's pick for the "European Capital of Culture in 2010", all of the cities will receive funding to complete the most important projects in their applications, Cultural Minister András Bozóki announced on Wednesday. Billions of forints in funding will be made available for the projects under the National Development Plan. The money will come from EU and Hungarian state subsidies as well as private capital. Bozóki added that Pécs was chosen in a nearly unanimous vote by an international jury. Besides the citys development plans, the fact that it is a university town with plenty of architectural and historical assets and its being a gateway to the Balkans were important considerations in the decision making. Bozóki said he would inform Brussels about the decision in a few days, where a final decision is expected for next spring. Pécs will share the title in 2010 with a German town.
