Deputy Chief of Mission David Kostelancik is temporarily leading the U.S. Embassy in Budapest after Ambassador David B. Cornstein went to the U.S. for medical treatment, Népszava reported.
Cornstein did not return from the U.S. after accompanying Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó to Washington last week, the paper said. According to the report, the diplomat remained in his home country for health reasons, missing out on Mike Pompeo’s visit to Budapest on Monday.
Cornstein said he was very sorry that he could not return to his post and attend Pompeo’s visit, but his health problems prevented him from doing so. He hopes that he can return to Budapest as soon as possible to work on matters that are important for bilateral relations, the Népszava report says.
