Budapest to host third European cultural conference

Some forty cultural ministers and similar number of keynote speakers from Europe are invited to the Budapest conference on Europe's cultural integration due on November 17-19, cultural minister András Bozóki said on Thursday. The conference will be the third after the Berlin and Paris meetings, and will be attended by some 300-400 participants. Speaking after a meeting of current and future EU member states’ ambassadors and the heads of foreign cultural institutes in Hungary, András Bozóki said that cultural diplomacy was a possible tool to reinforce European identity when signs of crisis surfaced in politics. He added that culture could bring together disappointed and therefore less active people and nations in Europe. Bozóki stressed that with lack of debates on Europe's cultural fundaments people tend to feel less enthusiast for the EU, which could have negative effects. According to the minister it should be demonstrated that Europe is not simply an economic, social, police or border control unit but primarily a cultural unit.
