Bulgaria's consumer confidence index increased by 4.1 percentage points in January compared to the reading recorded three months earlier, mainly due to increased confidence among the rural population, the Sofia-based National Statistical Institute (NSI) said on Friday.

Consumer confidence among urban and rural inhabitants went up by 3.1 pp and 7.6 pp, respectively. According to consumers, the general economic situation in the country over the last 12 months has deteriorated.

However, their expectations for the next 12 months are less negative compared to the October survey, according to the survey. As regards the unemployment in the country over the next 12 months, the forecasts are shifting towards stabilization or a slight decrease, as a result of which the balance indicator decreased by 0.9 pp, the report showed.
