IOM Study Highlights Needs of Ukrainian Refugees in Hungary
Some 60% of refugees arriving in Hungary from Ukraine do not know where to turn for information upon arrival, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
The organization conducts regular surveys of displaced persons fleeing to Hungary from the war in Ukraine to understand better the current trends and how to respond to the changing needs of its beneficiaries.
Other key findings from IOM's Hungary Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) Report for Q1 include that 77% of those arriving are women, 65% of whom have higher education and 63% foreign language skills. Practical needs upon arrival include transport, accommodation, and finances.
Information needs upon arrival concerned financial support to better cope with displacement, accommodation support and employment.
Some 43% of those surveyed had no intention to move on from Hungary until the situation at home is resolved, while 36% intended to move on to another country soon.
The top types of assistance received in Hungary included transportation, food, and accommodation, while the top challenges included language, financial issues, lack of information, housing, and services.
More than 5.2 million people have been internally displaced in Ukraine due to Russia's war, and a further 7.7 million have fled to safety across international borders such as Hungary's.
