Number of livestock farms in Hungary falls

Livestock is the main business of 25% of Hungarian farms, down from 46% 10 years earlier, a farm census conducted by the Central Statistical Office (KSH) shows.
The census, conducted once every decade, shows crops are the main business of 67% of farms, up from 41% in 2010.
KSH said the shift can be explained by the low profitability of livestock farming and a European Union agricultural policy that encourages crop farming.
The census shows the number of farms has fallen from 351,000 to 234,000 over the past decade.
Ágnes Patay, the project manager for the farm census, said around half of farms are headed by people over the age of 40, who have no formal training in agriculture. However, she added that around 60% of the heads of farms with annual output of EUR 500,000 or more have a college or university degree in agriculture.
