The government of Hungary and Chinese technology company Huawei signed a memorandum of understanding on Thursday to enhance the strategic cooperation started in 2013, the Economic Development Ministry said, according to state news wire MTI.

The MoU was signed by Economic Development Minister Marton Nagy and Huawei Technologies chief executive for Hungary and the Western Balkans region Gao Weijie during a visit to Huawei headquarters in Shenzhen by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.

Under the agreement, Huawei will establish ties with players in Hungary's technology ecosystem, such as Neumann Nonprofit, while partnering with professional forums like the 5G Coalition and the Artificial Intelligence Coalition on advancing digital transformation.

The government is counting on Huawei's cooperation to support its commitment to achieving energy sovereignty and taking advantage of the green transformation and renewable energy production, with special regard to the application of related digital technology and smart energy systems, according to the agreement.

The MoU also outlines Huawei's participation in upgrading Hungary's network of charging stations for electric vehicles.

The ministry noted that all of Huawei's business units have a local presence, while the company operates its biggest logistics and production base outside of China in Hungary, with a staff of over 2,000.
