Hungary Boosts Funding for Fertility Procedures

Hungary is spending HUF 3 billion to expand its fertility treatment network and making changes to treatment protocols that will boost expenditures by HUF 2 bln a year, state secretary Péter Takács said on Wednesday, according to a report by state news wire MTI.
Some 80 fertility clinics will be set up at hospitals in counties where there is no existing fertility center by year-end, Takács said. The state will also start subsidizing 100% of the cost of fertility drugs for men as it already does for ones for women, he added.
Dóra Vesztergom, who heads the National Hospital Directorate for Reproduction, said embryo culture periods covered by the state would be extended from three to five days.
Takács said that since the state had taken a more active role in fertility treatment starting in 2018 -- as part of government policies to stop depopulation -- the number of fertility treatments had doubled to over 10,000 a year. Those treatments now result in more than 2,300 births a year, he added.
