The government submitted an amendment to the constitution to lawmakers on Tuesday that would allow the state to assign citizens unique identifiers necessary for digital administration, according to a report by state news wire MTI.

The authors of the proposed amendment note that the use of unique digital identifiers would be voluntary.

The government earlier said the amendment on the unique identifiers would be necessary to allow the rollout of the Digital Citizenship Program expanding paperless state administration.

Outlining the program for MPs at a meeting of parliament's economy committee a week earlier, Antal Rogán, the head of the Prime Minister's Cabinet Office, said the measures would be of "great importance" from the perspective of Hungary's economic competitiveness in the future.
