ÖBB Detaches Hungarian Direct Trains Due to Delays
ÖBB, the Austrian railway company, is to detach all Hungarian direct trains from the Western European network because of excessive delays, according to business daily Világgazdaság.
The firm says it has warned Hungarian State Railways (MÁV) multiple times, but it could not solve the problem. Therefore, all passengers must get off the trains in Vienna and embark on another.
The measure affects multiple routes to German and Austrian cities. "In order for ÖBB not to force passengers coming from Budapest to transfer in Vienna, we should have taken steps that would have disproportionately adversely affected domestic transport in Hungary,"
MÁV explained in a statement. "At the same time, it depends primarily on the decisions of the Austrian state railways that the temporary traffic order in Vienna does not cause more than minimal inconvenience to the affected passengers: they can help, for example, by starting connecting journeys from nearby tracks, or by waiting for Budapest trains arriving within the grace period. Negotiations between ÖBB and MÁV officials are ongoing," the Hungarian railway company added.
