Czech Retail Sales Continue to Shrink in August

Retail trade in the Czech Republic declined 2.8% year-on-year in August, slipping further from an upwardly revised 2.1% fall in the previous month, as sales of both food and non-food items dropped, data from the Czech Statistical Office (CZSO) showed on Friday.

Sales of food, beverages, and tobacco contracted 3.2% (vs -4.7% in July), and those of non-food products decreased by 4.1% (vs -3.8%).

At the same time, retail sales of automotive fuel in specialized stores grew 3.7% (vs 14.3%), and sales and repairs of motor vehicles and motorcycles increased notably by 7.3%.

Data also showed that retail sales via mail order or the internet advanced 3.7%.

On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, retail sales tumbled 0.8% in August, following a 0.1% increase in the previous month.
