Fewer Guest Nights at Lake Balaton This Year

Tourism

Although Lake Balaton is unfailingly the most popular destination among Hungarians, from January to the end of July, domestic guests spent 347,000 fewer nights at the "Hungarian Sea," reported RTL Híradó.

According to restaurateurs interviewed by the TV channel, they had a poor summer.

A hotel operator reported that it experienced a 40% drop in traffic in June, and the number of guest nights also dropped significantly. He said this was his weakest summer in 13 years.

According to one expert, the Russo-Ukrainian war and the post-epidemic period also impacted tourism.

The report noted consumer prices rose by an average of 17.6% between July 2022 and July 2023, and holiday services became more expensive by 20.2%. Caterers were forced to raise prices because the price of raw materials, overhead, and labor costs increased.
