The capital's municipality has decided to create a new, creative, green memorial on the northern slope of Gellért Hill, between the Garden of Philosophers and Hegyalja út, in honor of Nobel Peace Prize winner Nelson Mandela, South Africa's first black president, the Mayor's Office said, according to a report by hvg.hu.

According to the office, the Nelson Mandela Park, which will be created on a 5,000 sqm area of lawn and woodland, will be Budapest's first permanent land art work.

The memorial park will represent the central message of the life's work of Mandela, who died in 2013 at the age of 95: the path of reconciliation and forgiveness.

The inauguration of the park will take place on July 18, International Mandela Day.
