Choir of Disadvantaged Angels

Utcaszak, a drama group committed to social issues and working with Roma children is looking for corporate sponsorship to continue its education programs next year. And you will be able to get an idea of what they do when they put on their play “Choir of Disadvantaged Angels” with English subtitles in MU Theatre on Friday and Saturday (December 16 and 17).

The play focuses on juvenile prostitution. “The life situations featured in the performance were collected by us in little villages of northeast Hungary,” says Balázs Simon, the leader of the theater company. These stories were first transformed into improvisational scenes, from which the play was gradually built up. “Besides the use of masques, we widely use jugglery and other acrobatic techniques during the performance,” Simon notes. On the one hand, those techniques transform the blunt sexual content of the play into a stylized idiom; on the other hand, they often express the fatality that governs the characters’ lives.

Thus far, the play has been largely performed on the spot, that is, in northeast Hungarian villages. “At the moment, we have no funding to continue our performances,” Simon. The theater group decided to stage the play for a more intellectual, middle-class Budapest audience in order to generate income through ticket sales, which they hope to use to finance the continuation of their educational performances.

The theater company’s Drama in Education sessions have been taking place in the Rákospalota Juvenile Girls’ Reformatory Center in Budapest’s District XV. The company wishes to continue the drama sessions in 2017, but lacks the necessary financial resources; that is why it is seeking corporate or institutional sponsors.

In 2013, Utcaszak received the 11th Active Citizenship Award from the U.S. Ambassador in Budapest for its socially responsible art.
