Welt am Sonntag: Merkel to help Hungary ‘despite Orbán’s ingratitude’

Realizing that the EU would fail without Germany, Angela Merkel has decided that despite (Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor) “Orbánʼs ingratitude” and dissenting voices in her own party she would “drastically reduce the pressure of migration on Hungary”, an opinion piece in the conservative Welt am Sonntag said on Sunday.
The piece, titled “Europeʼs Orbanization: why we donʼt want to be a part of it” points to the problem that, while in Germany many people had hoped that through the EU the nation can be superseded, elsewhere others “want to strengthen the nation through the EU”.
The article says that “nationalism could kill the EU” and that Germany cannot be “small and selfish” as this would drive the EU to demise.
Hence Merkelʼs measures in the interest of Eastern Europe and against German industry, such as organizing sanctions against Russia, reducing migration pressure and the rigor of austerity for Greece and sending Tornado fighter jets to Syria, the comment says, adding that Merkel has not communicated her motives well.
