Varga: Attacks against tax office target the state

Economy Minister Mihály Varga said attacks against the Tax and Customs Authority (NAV) are in fact directed at Hungarian state institutions and the budget, in a TV interview shown yesterday on commerecial channel ATV. The minister said that NAV sees to its duties with integrity, and tax revenues are flowing at the appropriate rate.
In reaction to a newspaper article suggesting that the tax chief Ildikó Vida used to be a silent partner in a "phantom company" until the firm was wound up in 2011, Varga said he immediately contacted Vida concerning the matter and Vida confirmed that she indeed used to be a silent partner of the company in question, although no revenue or expenditure occured which would have needed taxing.
Surfacing after weeks out of the public eye, Ildikó Vida, head of the national tax authority (NAV), admitted in an interview published on November 5 that she is on the list of six Hungarians who were recently told they could not enter the U.S. because they are suspected of corruption. She denied any wrongdoing. Later Varga said Vida will keep her post, despite being banned from the United States on suspicion of corruption, Economy Minister Mihály Varga told Hungarian public radio.
