While anti-Trump U.S. voters flocked the streets of the nationʼs biggest cities, in some cases even setting them alight in protest at Donald Trump’s shocking triumph, Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said the controversial Republican candidate’s victory is "a return to reality," according to reports.

Talking to Hungarian journalists in London Wednesday after meeting British Prime Minister Theresa May, Orbán said the world has always benefited when it has managed to free itself from ruling ideologies to return to the terrain of reality, according to Hungarian news portal 444.hu.

“This is what has now happened in the United States, and this gives a chance for the rest of the Western world to drag itself from the captivity of ideologies, political correctness, and a way of thinking and way of speaking distanced from reality, in order to finally get back to the terrain of reality,” the Hungarian leader was quoted as saying.

The Hungarian prime minister was one of the first world leaders to congratulate Trump on his victory, once it became certain, posting a message on his official Facebook page that read: “Congratulations. What a great news. Democracy is still alive.”  This was soon followed by congratulations to Trump issued by Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó and Minister for National Economy Mihály Varga.

Trump’s victory spurred opposing views among world leaders. While Russia’s President Vladimir Putin and Marine Le Pen, president of France’s national-conservative National Front, praised Trump’s victory, German Chancellor Angela Merkel urged cooperation between Germany and the U.S., while implying that Trump should tone down his controversial views on gender and racial equality. François Hollande, President of the French Republic, predicted a period of uncertainty to come, which needs to be faced with lucidity and clarity, according to international media reports.

Trump success seen heralding ʼnew eraʼ

While experts say that populism is on a rapid spread worldwide, it is widely believed that a new era is beginning with the triumph of Donald Trump, who will be the first president of the U.S. never to have held public office or served in the military.

Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó was reported as saying that it has become clear that a new global political and economic era has begun, as all the countries of the world must face historical challenges in the global economy and global politics. “It has been an extraordinary election campaign in the past year, which has closed with a clear decision by the American people,” the Hungarian foreign minister was quoted as saying.

According to Szijjártó, who did not fail to stress the challenges related to migration, mass immigration and war, it has become clear that a new type of politics is needed to respond to historical challenges now arising, Hungarian news agency MTI reported. He said a new and brave approach is needed, as it has been proven that traditional tools do not work properly anymore, MTI added.
