Szijjártó sees no need to rush Brexit talks

Brexit negotiations should not be rushed, and should not take place until all the European Union member states are certain what they want to achieve by the end of the talks, Péter Szijjártó, Hungary’s minister of foreign affairs and trade, said following a meeting with his counterparts from this country’s Visegrad Four neighbors.

“For us, the content of the negotiations and the end result is far more important than when the negotiations will start,” Szijjártó said following talks with foreign ministers of the V4 countries – Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Poland – and the German foreign minister, in Prague today, according to Hungarian news agency MTI.
“In this situation, when the EU must embark on an untravelled path – as none of those present want to leave the EU – it is very important that we consult as much as possible,” Szijjártó said, according to MTI.
After the meeting in Prague, Szijjártó also participated in a meeting in Warsaw of foreign ministers of countries that had joined the EU during enlargement, MTI added.
At the end of the day, Szijjártó said the talks produced a “useful discussion”.
Before the two meetings, the foreign minister said yesterday given the regionʼs strong economic ties with the U.K., and the hundreds of thousands of people from this part of Europe who work and live in Britain, Central Europe wants a place at the table during the talks on the U.K.ʼs exit from the EU.
