Szijjártó says Hungary condemns Turkey coup attempt

Hungary firmly condemns the attempted coup d’état in Turkey, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó said Saturday, according to Hungarian news agency MTI. Szijjártó (pictured) added that, based on the events that took place, the manner of the actions taken and the number of victims, “this can be called an act of terrorism.”
The minister stressed that Turkey is Hungary’s friend and strategic ally, and emphasized that Hungary stands in solidarity with the democratically elected government in Turkey and the Turkish president.
Szijjártó said he had spoken by telephone in the morning with his Turkish counterpart, Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, and was told that the Turkish government and central powers have taken back control and are “in charge of the situation.” Çavuşoğlu told Szijjártó that a well-organized but isolated part of the army had carried out the attempted coup. Szijjártó added that he was aware of shots having been fired in the street outside the Hungarian Embassy in Ankara, but stressed that they were not directed at the embassy building or its staff.
