Szijjártó meets U.S. managers in Washington

Enjoying a day away from the heat of the U.S.-Hungary fracas about corruption, Hungarian Minister for Foreign Trade and Foreign Affairs Péter Szijjártó met with top officials of U.S. corporations in Washington yersterday.

Szijjártó said that top managers of Generl Motors (GM), which operates one of Europe's most modern engine factories in Szentgottháard, western Hungary, through Opel, told him that they are very satisfied with the operating conditions in Hungary, according to a report from MTI, the Hungarian news agency.

The Hungarian foreign minister also held meetings with top officials of General Electric. GE is the biggest employer in Hungary, with more than 13,500 workers. In addition, he met with top managers of NBC Universal and Comcast, and spoke with  them about recent changes the Hungarian government has made to develop Hungary's film industry.

The minister participated in a business breakfast attended by 15 corporate managers including representatives of Coca-Cola, Alcoa, IBM, Oracle and Sikorsky Aircraft Corp, held at the Business Council for International Understanding (BCIU).

Szijjártó noted that Hungary had increased its foreign trade by 23% last year, and that, during the first seven months of this year, exports to the U.S. increased by 41%. Total U.S. investment in Hungary exceeds USD 9 bln and more than 83,000 Hungarians are employed by U.S. companies, he added.

The minister also told top officials of Owens-Illinois and Delphi about the plans of the Hungarian government to support the expansion of their operations inHungary.

Szijjártó also held talks with Kurt Walker, former NATO ambassador and head of the McCain Institute.
