Szijjártó: Hungary won’t ban Soros foundations

Int’l Relations

As long as civilian organizations abide by the laws of Hungary there is no reason to single them out, Hungary’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó said in an interview with Hungarian daily Magyar Hírlap, in response to a question on whether Hungary would ban foundations of U.S. business magnate George Soros, as other countries have done.

Commenting on the apparently growing differences in opinion between Soros and the government, Szijjártó stressed that “in Hungary, Hungarian people decide on what political guidelines and values a government should follow when leading the country”, according to Magyar Hírlap.

Commenting on Hungarian-U.S. relationships, Szijjártó once again noted that economic relations are excellent and the two countries cooperate well security-policy-wise. However, the political cooperation of the two countries is “loaded with conflicting views”, Szijjártó said. In response to former President Bill Clinton’s earlier speech, which contained criticisms of Hungary and Poland, Szijjártó said, that sometimes “insults” materialize from the United States that are “impossible to explain” and are “unacceptable”. “This hurts,” Szijjártó added.

Commenting on Russian relations, Szijjártó stressed that the sanctions the EU has introduced towards Russia hurt Hungarian exports, as Hungarian companies lost €4.5 billion on falling exports in the past two and a half years, Magyar Hírlap reported. “Concurrent to the sovereignty and geographic integrity of Ukraine, there needs to be a discussion on whether sanctions against Russia brought us closer to abiding by the Minsk treaty or not,” Szijjártó said.
