Szijjártó: Hungary trashed by international media

The current sentiment of European politics does not allow for a pragmatic debate, and this is well-supported by “certain processes in international media,” Hungary’s Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said in an interview with weekly Figyelő, published today.

“A very tendentious media campaign is currently targeting Hungary,” the foreign minister told the weekly. Szijjártó (pictured) said he could not say who might be behind this media campaign and he did not want to “contribute to propagating conspiracy theories”.

As an example of what he means by this campaign, he said: “CNN reported live from a bus transporting refugees with the message that Hungary is acting in hostile way toward refugees and does not operate in line with international conventions. Later they reported from the studio that refugees arrived in Austria, where finally they were given warm tea and blankets. However, they did not report that if refugees had gone to refugee camps, instead of haphazardly occupying one of our railway stations, they would have received the same care.”

In response to a question as to whether European media is “friendlier”, the minister said “not at all”. He argued that “if I take a look at daily publications, there is a tendentious and false image being created of Hungary.”
