Spokesperson: Orbán, Juncker to discuss receiving EU help
The meeting between Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, scheduled for Thursday, could provide a forum for the leaders to discuss how the EU can help Hungary handle the current influx of refugees arriving to the EU through Hungary, EC Spokesperson Natasha Bertaud (pictured) said today at a press conference, according to Hungarian news agency MTI.
In speaking about “hot spots”, which are temporary offices set up by the EU to register refugees in countries under extraordinary migrational pressure, it will be taken into consideration whether Hungary should receive such aid, the spokesperson said. Similar “hot spots” are already in place in Italy and the establishment of “hot spots” will be intensified in Greece, the spokesperson said.
Although the spokesperson welcomed Hungarian efforts to protect EU borders, in response to a query by a journalist, she confirmed Brussels’ point of view reported earlier that they believe the fence being built on the Hungarian-Serbian border "does not carry the appropriate message". However, she added that Hungary has the right to decide how it will protect its borders.
