Spokesperson: Marriage is an institution, not a right

Analysis

Any statement suggesting that the rights of homosexuals are not respected in Hungary is invalid, as they are equally treated citizens in this country, government spokesperson Zoltán Kovács told a journalist at online daily index.hu yesterday.

When queried by the journalist why same-sex marriage is illegal in Hungary, Kovács said that “as far as I know marriage is not a right but an institution that comes with rights, but more importantly obligations.” The spokesperson added that “there are traditions in connection with marriage that are hundreds or even thousands of years old, and there are natural endowments that cannot and should not be disregarded.”

Hungary’s ruling Fidesz party is preparing a “family protection” campaign reportedly scheduled for September, and some claim that it may be an anti-homosexual campaign, according to index.hu.
