Social media study: Hungarians link Brexit, immigration

History

In the first week following the historic U.K. decision to leave the European Union, Brexit was found to dominate online discussion in Hungary: The topic was raised 19,689 times during Hungarian social media conversations, many of which focused on immigration, according to research provided yesterday by Bakamo.Social.

In monitoring taking place between June 23-29, the research firm said it found that 12% of Hungarians’ social media discussions of Brexit included mention of the term “immigrant” or related words, while 10.17% of the comments mentioned Putin and Russia.

“There is a quite strong ‘anti-migrant-policy’ camp in Hungary,” Bakamo.Social reported, noting that many of the social media comments monitored saw the issue in the context of problems with migrants and asylum seekers.

Surprisingly, there were very few comments about what the Brexit would mean for Hungarians living and working in the U.K., Bakamo.Social reported.

Other findings reported from the research include:

  • Many Hungarians are concerned about the economic and political repercussions of the vote, while others are hopeful that it will lead to necessary reforms in the EU.
  • Some users see business opportunities for Hungarian firms to fill the new market gaps.
  • Other Hungarians were hopeful that the decision would cause the EU to be less inviting to migrants, as the influx of migrants was perceived as a driving force behind the U.K.’s choice.

Founded in Budapest, Bakamo.Social specializes in what the firm calls “social listening” – helping customers understand what topics are being discussed in social media, and identifying perceptions about those topics. Their customers include major multinationals, such as Audi, Mastercard, Nestle and Samsung.
