Serbian fence could cost HUF 6.6 bln

Issues

The Hungarian government reallocated HUF 6.6 bln from this yearʼs budget for the erection of a fence along the Hungarian-Serbian border intended to keep illegal immigrants out of the country, a resolution published in the latest issue of the official gazette Magyar Közlöny reveals.

The amount was taken from the "extraordinary government measures" line and reallocated to the "costs incurred by law enforcement organizations" line, Magyar Közlöny says.

The government said earlier that the erection of the 175 km-long, four-meter-high fence is only a temporary measure.

Voting in an expedited procedure without debate on Monday, lawmakers approved amendments to Hungary’s immigration act to provide legal grounds for building a fence on the Serbian border and allowing for expedited decisions in the case of refugees who apply for asylum.
