Ruling Fidesz holds private conference today
Hungary’s ruling Fidesz party is reportedly holding an extraordinary government conference today, in which Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is expected to evaluate, behind closed doors, the governance of the last five years and the performance of MPs, Hungarian online daily index.hu reported.
The conference was originally scheduled for July 3, however, it was postponed due to the “growing levels of illegal immigration and to domestic and international duties regarding this”, according to the Prime Minster’s office. However, government sources for index.hu suggested that Orbán postponed the conference because the government’s migration policy was working and he did not want to divert attention with the conference.
The portal reported that Fidesz politicians referred to today’s conference in the recent weeks as a milestone in the history of Fidesz governance.
According to the portal, the significance of today’s conference is also validated by the fact that invitations were sent out to OECD Ambassador Zoltán Cséfalvay, National Bank of Hungary (MNB) Governor György Matolcsy, State Audit Office of Hungary President László Domokos and Fiscal Council Chairman Árpád Kovács.
Index reports that the conference will host presenters from the Central Statistical Office (KSH) and MNB, who will speak about the current situation and trends in the Hungarian economy.
