Reuters: As fence nears completion, Hungary considers reinforcement

The fence being built along Hungary’s southern border with Serbia is due to be completed by August 31, however, the Hungarian government is considering reinforcing the border with helicopters, mounted police and dogs, and perhaps even a military presence, Reuters reported today.

Chief Police Commissioner Károly Papp said the Hungarian police is preparing six border patrol units comprising 2,106 officers to be equipped with helicopters, horses and dogs. He emphasized: “They do not have and will not get an order to shoot.”
Government spokesman Zoltán Kovács said that next week the Hungarian parliament would debate whether to employ the army to confront the record number of refugees entering Hungary.
According to Kovács, “Hungary’s government and national security cabinet … have discussed the question of how the army could be employed to help protect Hungary’s border and the borders of the EU.”
