Report: Refugees arrive to Budapest in locked wagons

Workers of state-owned railway company MÁV lock the doors of wagons in which refugees travel, from the outside, and only open them once the train has arrived in Budapest, Hungarian commercial channel RTL Klub’s news broadcast reported yesterday.

In response to questions from RTL Klub, MÁV said the doors are locked for “safety reasons”, as the locked wagons have “different technical parameters”, and that is how MÁV tries to prevent people from getting off the train while it is still moving.

MÁV added that the wagons, in which refugees travel, are different from regular wagons in order to prevent refugees from buying tickets for wagons that are part of MÁVʼs InterCity service.

However, civilian volunteers of Migration Aid claim that locking refugees up is considered “inhuman treatment” and that refugees are so startled by being locked in that they flee the wagons immediately once the doors are opened.
