Several European Union member states have issued an official proposal to create a “mini Schengen area” within the existing EU Schengen Zone, which would exclude Hungary among many other Eastern European countries, the European Commission said yesterday, according to Hungarian online daily hvg.hu.

According to Dutch online portal De Telegraaf, the mini Schengen area would include Austria, Germany and the Benelux states, and beyond the boundaries of these countries, transit zones would be established for refugees, hvg.hu reports.

The Associated Press said that the establishment of a border-control-free zone inside Schengen would violate EU treaties.

The EU’s Schengen Zone includes 22 EU members, and four non-EU members, hvg.hu added.
